Bio

            Captain John T. McMurtrie, Jr., USN (Ret.), retired after 30 years of service to the Navy and his country on July 1, 2007 and began his second career as an educator in August of 2007. A native of Aiken, South Carolina, he graduated from Aiken High School in 1973 after spending three years participating in the NJROTC unit, eventually becoming the Battalion Executive Officer. He received a NROTC scholarship and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Marine Science. He entered the Navy through the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) and was commissioned an Ensign on 13 May 1977. Additional postgraduate studies include the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he earned a Master of Science degree in Oceanography and Meteorology in 1983. He is also a 1995 graduate of the United States Army War College Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania. He is currently seeking a Masters of Education degree in Secondary Education – General Science from Auburn University Montgomery (AUM) in the graduate studies program. CAPT McMurtrie spent three years on the faculty at Valley High School, Valley, Alabama in the Department of Science teaching physical science. He most recently started the Naval JROTC program at Chapel Hill High School in Douglasville, GA. He served as a Scoutmaster for 10 years and has served as an Elder in his church. He is married to the former Teresa Jo Lynde of Peterson, IA, has three children Sarah (32), Julie (29) and John (25) and two grandchildren Zoe (7) and Gabriel (6).


           Captain McMurtrie first reported for duty aboard USS SEMMES (DDG 18) forward deployed to the Mediterranean Sea followed by Surface Warfare Officer's School Indoctrination course in Newport, Rhode Island. He returned to SEMMES and served as Fire Control Officer, Damage Control Assistant and Combat Information Center Officer. His Department Head tours include USS THORN (DD 988) where he served as Operations Officer from May 1984 to December 1985 and completed a circumnavigation of South America as part of UNITAS XXV. In January 1986, Captain McMurtrie reported to USS WAINWRIGHT (CG 28) and served as Operations Officer until March 1988 to include deployments to the Mediterranean, North Atlantic and Arabian Gulf. He served as Executive Officer in USS JOSEPH HEWES (FFT 1078) from September 1990 to March 1992. He commanded USS CARNEY (DDG 64) from February 1996 to August 1997. He commissioned CARNEY on 13 April 1996 and delivered her to the fleet following extensive weapon and engineering tests.


           Captain McMurtrie's shore assignments include the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 6, Charleston, South Carolina as Readiness and Training Officer and Chief Staff Officer from March 1988 to August 1990. He served as the Joint and Allied Requirements Officer (N62J) for the Navy Tactical Command System Afloat (NTCS-A), on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C. from March 1992 to June 1994. Captain McMurtrie reported to the Joint Theater Air and Missile Defense Organization (JTAMDO) in October 1997. JTAMDO is a Chairman's controlled activity reporting through the Director of Resources (J-8) to the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Joint Staff. He served as the Director for Interoperability and Operational Architectures. Captain McMurtrie served as the Professor of Naval Science, Auburn University from July 2000 to July 2003. He also served as a Professor of Warfighting at the Air War College located at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, AL from August 2003 to July 2007.

            Captain McMurtrie's personal awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with gold star, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two gold stars, the Navy Commendation Medal with three gold stars, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Military Outstanding Volunteer Medal and various unit and service ribbons. He has made deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, South America, West Africa, Caribbean Sea, North Atlantic Ocean and Arabian Gulf.
