The Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County is pleased to announce that the Friends of Art and Music Education of Douglas County (FAME) has named CAC’s Executive Director, Laura Lieberman, as the 2012 recipient of the Kathy Brock Memorial Award. The award was presented on August 1 at the annual Fine Arts Teachers Appreciation Breakfast/pre-term meeting of all Douglas County School System fine arts teachers (visual arts, choral, band and drama).
Each year, FAME presents the Kathy Brock Memorial Award to recognize a local education, administrator, or community member who has made significant contributions to the fine arts programs of the Douglas County Schools. Melody Chambers, coordinator of the Youth Art Month exhibit at the Cultural Arts Center every March and the visual arts teacher at Chapel Hill Middle School, remarked that Laura Lieberman was chosen due to her tireless efforts, dedication and devotion to arts education and the fine arts for the students of Douglas County since becoming the Cultural Arts Council director in 2003.
During her decade-long leadership at the Cultural Arts Council, Lieberman has initiated many new model arts education initiatives benefitting children and young people in our community including the Spring Break Arts Camp offered in partnership with Douglas County at Deer Lick Park and the Arts in After School program provided in partnership with Douglas County Schools’ Community in the Schools Afterschool program. She has also worked with the CAC Board of Directors to develop a Youth Arts Council, an ongoing project at the Cultural Arts Center created in order to offer student input into the planning and implementation of school-based programming and to recognize outstanding fine art students.
Lieberman was presented with an original painting by a talented young Douglas County artist, which had been displayed at the Youth Art Month display at the Cultural Arts Center, and her name was added to the Kathy Brock Memorial Award plaque that is displayed in the School System offices. The Kathy Brock Memorial Award is named for Dr. Kathy Brock, former Director of Curriculum and Instructional Technology for the Douglas County School System, who was a strong supporter of the fine arts curriculum. The 2011 Award was given to Douglas County Director of Communications and Community Relations Wes Tallon.
FAME’s members are teachers, parents and school administrators who believe in the importance of fine arts education. FAME, one of ten satellite groups of the Cultural Arts Council, seeks to foster and recognize excellence in the fine arts programs of Douglas County through the sponsorship of the Fine Arts Teachers Appreciation Breakfast, the Douglas County Honor Chorus, and the Douglas County Band.
